Built in the immediate aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Holden Block represents one of the best and most architecturally luxurious styles of office building still standing today.
Considered one of Chicago’s “old settlers,” Holden commissioned the namesake building as a “speculative property” designed to accommodate a variety of commercial uses. Architect Stephen Shipman was praised for using highly desirable Buena Vista stone in the construction of the front facade. Elaborate carvings and motifs along the windows serve as a nod to the Italianate building style, which exploded in popularity when the City began rebuilding its commercial districts. Today, only a handful of these Italianate and Buena Vista buildings remain, and the Holden Block is considered the best surviving example of 1870s-era commercial loft development.
